Bill Warfield and his trumpet are quite the busy couple. As composer and bandleader for his two current outifts, namely the Bill Warfield Octet and the New York Jazz Octet, he covers a wide variety of musical genres that comprise everything from salsa and funk-tinged to Hard-Bop and move between classic to modern approaches.

Mr. Warfield’s resume includes collaborations with such luminaries as Ornette Coleman, Dave Liebman, Paul Anka, Mel Torme, Randy Brecker, David Sanborn and Sonny Stitt to name just a few. His recorded catalog spans eight releases that have met with critical acclaim.

In this feature on the prolific artist, we focused on The New York Jazz Octet whose lineup presently includes: Bill Warfield – trumpet, flugelhorn, Dave Riekenberg – alto and tenor sax, Don Braden – tenor sax, Sam Burtis – trombone, Kenny Werner – piano, Vic Juris – guitar, Gene Perla – bass and Scott Neumann.

We asked Mr. Warfield for some words about his current work with the band:

“I’m flattered to be able to have my music performed by these wonderful friends and musicians. I formed the group in 2005 in New York City and have recently released our second album on Planet Arts Network – “A Window That Shows Me The Moon”.

“I have worked with all of these guys for many years in NYC, doing Broadway shows, recordings and whatever work we have been a part of. They are literally the best people I could have chosen. They are the core of my Big Band, the New York Jazz Repertory Ensemble. We just played at the Iridium in NYC last night with Randy Brecker and few other friends and it was a wonderful experience.

“I am currently working on a trumpet concerto which will be performed and recorded by my good friend and Grammy award winning trumpet player, Randy Brecker. We are flattered to have been selected by Musiczeitgeist for inclusion among your roster of featured artists in 2013.”
