Though on the surface they appear to pander unapologetically to many of the standard sexist tropes of age-old ciphers, there is a refreshing non-linear alacrity in what a three man troupe from Jersey is throwing down. In both the programming and flow, a provocative, acute lucidity shines through and grabs hold before your politically correcting filters can stop it from infecting you and reaching out for more.

THIRD MIND definitely pays no mind to what your definition of “real” rap is. They instead aim to deliver on the topics that they know personally and hold dear to their hearts – rowdy songs that cover the topics of sexual encounters, staying cool, substances, and simply not caring. Their sound concocts swirling loops of synths and voices which hover over bombastic drums that keep the feel off-kilter, while two emcee’s craft verses that ooze wordplay and leave you to wonder how these kids from New Jersey “flow so dumb.”

THIRD MIND’s journey started in 2009, in the Wall, New Jersey basement of rapper/producer DeScribe. After making beats and growing tired of looking for rappers to rap on them, DeScribe recruited his best friend/fellow rapper Grimace to spit their own rhymes. They haven’t looked back since – eventually linking up with another friend who happens to produce and DJ – Alex Trevelyan, solidifying their line-up and playing shows all over the Tri-State area, while also recording music that they are passionate about.

Download their newly released mixtape – “This Is Not Third Mind” – via Soundcloud.

Look out for Third Mind performing at Santos Party House in New York City on September 13, 2013.
