Artist Profile: Danish Band “Afenginn” Deserves Your Winsome Hear-Patterns

Afenginn is a five-piece band based out of Copenhagen, Denmark playing a delirious mix of classical composition, odd Balkan meters, progressive rock, Scandinavian folk music, etc. The music is often quite cinematic and ranges from the smallest pianissimo to wild and roaring parts and is performed on clarinet, violin, mandolin, bass and drums.

It is a startling and beguiling style that may draw comparison to such underground favorites as Penguin Cafe Orchestra or De la Guarda, but really is a beautiful little tinderbox unto itself. Winsome, and clever small-orchestral arrangements trade places with explosive emotive passages that sound like a Klezmer band busking for dinner money outside the gates of Hell played with an extraordinary dexterity and aggressive joie de vivre.

Afenginn was formed in 2002 and has in these 11 years released five full-length albums, received three Danish Music Awards, toured extensively in many parts of the world and done several big scale productions – concerts with symphony orchestra, a high profiled ballet, theater concerts and performed at big festivals, clubs and concert halls all around the globe.

The band is always looking for new adventures and the next bigger thing is already coming up this summer: A big project where Afenginn performs together with a 16-piece mixed choir and a marimba. New music is at this very moment being composed and existing Afenginn music is being arranged for this constellation. The show is called Choirnevale and will be performed at the Faroe Islands and in Germany and Denmark later this year.

The fifth full length album from Afenginn is named LUX and was released worldwide on January 28 2013. LUX is following the award winning “Bastard Etno” from 2010 and the release will be accompanied with tours in Europe throughout 2013.
